I'm Making a Stand to Make the Difference!

RIDBC develops and delivers innovative sensory services for children in their early years to ensure they reach their developmental goals, build independence and participate fully in all aspects of daily life.

Thanks to you, children with hearing loss might hear their name for the first time, or learn to say β€˜I love you’ to their parents. Vision impaired children could learn braille and have access to a whole new world of storybooks and learning.

Every dollar I raise from my virtual lemonade stand will go towards RIDBC to help more children and families experience these moments of joy.

So, please buy a cup, jug, bucket or whole case of lemonade and help me help children in need today!

Summer on Sunrise

Summer was pretty stoked to see her picture on the TV yesterday morning! Lewis is VERY jealous πŸ˜‚

Happy Hearing Moments...

Monday 15th Jun
Summer loves music and dancing. She loves her ballet classes although the loud music, lots of voices and all the hard surfaces always proved a little difficult for her. Nonetheless, she had a ball! She was just always a few steps behind watching and copying the dances rather than hearing the instructions. Summer received a new device last year that is compatible with the Roger microphone and Summer's lovely ballet teachers wore it happily. All of a sudden, Summer could now localise her teacher's voice and hear the instructions. She was doing the dance at the same time as the other children. Summer couldn't have cared less, she loved her ballet either way. But I can tell you that this Mumma had happy tears watching my little ballerina be able to hear in such a noisy environment. Not because hearing at ballet is the be all and end all, but it filled me with so much hope for her imminent start to kinder and her education. All of a sudden things looked like they might just be a bit easier for my little girl. It was a wonderful change in confidence and gave her such a sense of independence. This was really clear in her early intervention classes as well. Before she had her newer device, Summer often needed physical contact with me in a noisy situation. She also chose to stay quiet and try to listen rather than participate in her group activities. People would always comment on how quiet she was and in my head I would laugh because when Summer is in a quiet, familiar setting, it's hard to stop her talking! She loved going to the classes but would often sit on my lap and rarely talk. She had a great time and would debrief in detail on the drive home. So much detail! Once she was fitted with her new device and her teacher was wearing the Roger microphone, she was a new kid in the classes. She didn't need me. She sat directly in front of her teacher and chatted the whole time. Much to everyone's surprise. Queue the happy tears from me again!

A bit of background...

Monday 15th Jun

When Summer was born she failed her newborn hearing test in the hospital 3 times. The person completing the 3rd test for us couldn't/wouldn't confirm anything for us at the time but referred us to an audiologist. She was very positive and said that the tests can be wrong etc etc but then finished up by saying her niece was deaf too, that's when the penny dropped. When Summer was two weeks old we came to Taralye to have further tests and she was diagnosed with a profound/total unilateral hearing loss and auditory neuropathy. After her diagnosis we enrolled in early intervention and started seeing her speech therapist, Kirralee regularlyΒ from the time she was 3 months old. Taralye has been a tremendous support for our whole family. Lewis, my son who doesn't have hearing loss, loves being part of the Taralye community too. Summer does small group classes to help with her language development and to build social skills. It is so nice to be a part of a community where hearing loss is the norm.

We love being a part of the Taralye community. We wanted to make a stand to show our support for an organisation that has given our family and so many others outstanding support and care.Β
